The United States will face a physician shortage in the coming years.
Because most existing medical schools are unable to increase class sizes
sufficiently to meet the need for new physicians, communities nationwide
are exploring the feasibility of starting new medical schools.
Kalamazoo, with its 35-year history of medical education, is well
positioned to consider this option.
The community already has experience in providing medical
education for third- and fourth-year medical students from Michigan
State University, and it has several residency programs managed through
the Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies, Borgess Hospital and the
Bronson HealthCare Group.
These organizations have partnered with Western Michigan University to
assess the feasibility of establishing a private medical school in
Kalamazoo. This Web site provides information regarding this initiative
and outlines the activities of the Feasibility Committee that was formed
to evaluate this opportunity.
